MIXING COURSE

Learn how to edit, mix and master your tracks professionally.

About the Course

The first lessons are dedicated to help students build upon their knowledge and skills on industry standard DAW software. This knowledge will provide a solid workflow foundation, much needed in order to be able to work in the DAW environment more comfortably, sufficiently and productively.

In the next step, students will learn how a professional recording / mixing studio operates, what type of equipment are used, how they are all connected and study its signal flow.

Students will then study the acoustic properties and characteristics of various acoustic instruments with reference to mixing.

Mixing in a well-balanced acoustic space, is crucial to being able to make the correct mixing decisions. During the course, students will also learn how to set up, measure, correct and optimise their own mixing /listening environment at home.

In the next stage, students will study in detail each mixing step.

During these steps we will study in detail:

  • Various mixing techniques, including balancing, panning, bussing, serial and parallel processing, mid/side processing, sidechaining etc
  • The different types of metering and how to use them when mixing
  • The various types of processors and how they are used effectively in mixing.
    • Some of the processors that will be covered in depth are: Equalizers, Dynamic Processors (such as Compressor, Multi- Band Compressor, Expander, De-Esser, Noise Gate, Transient Designer, Limiter etc.), Reverb, Delay, Distortion and other Effects.
  • How to give our tracks interest and character by applying special effects, such as distortion or other effects

In the final stage, students will learn how to utilize the appropriate processors and Mastering techniques, to finalize their track by giving gloss, loudness, fullness, balance, get their mix to sound good on different sound systems and prepare it for distribution.

To complete the course successfully, students will use Cyprus School of Sound’s professionally equipped and acoustically designed studios, to mix and master their chosen final project.

THE MIXING COURSE IS CREATED WITH THE ELECTRONIC OR THE ACOUSTIC MUSICIANS IN MIND, WHO WANT TO LEARN HOW TO EDIT, MIX AND MASTER THEIR OWN MUSIC.

Resources

The theoretical and some of the practical lessons take place in our state of the art classroom. Each student is provided with the latest iMac, audio interface, midi keyboard and set of headphones. The lessons are delivered in the form of presentation on an interactive smart-board.

The practical lessons take place in CSS’s specially designed studios. We offer two acoustically designed mixing booths, fully equipped with cutting edge professional studio equipment and the latest software.

Support

Due to the fact that the classes are small in size, students will benefit from having more time to experiment with the equipment and also receive better individual support by the teacher.

In addition to the variety of equipment and the latest technology that students enjoy at Private Institute Cyprus School of Sound, specially trained and experienced in the field lecturer, will be there each step of the way to ensure that individual support and guidance is given to each student. Our aim is to help nurture and develop our students’ creative and technical abilities.
